Description: Baraka is a unique and eye catching trip that involves travelling up the east coast of Australia in a horse drawn gypsy caravan and the aim of the journey is to raise $1 million for The Paul Zimmet Diabetes Research Fund [International Diabetes Institute]. Considering that there are approximately 1 million Diabetics in Australia, that’s $1 each we intend to raise. The journey covers some 7500km and will take about 1 year to complete. We are looking at departing Melbourne in March 2004. With Diabetes being the 6th leading cause of death in Australia, an additional 1 million new diabetics expected by 2010 and $1 Billion being spent annually on Diabetes treatment, education and awareness of the disease is vital to the health and well being of the population at large. Through its fundraising activities Baraka intends to benefit the greater community. Baraka is a melding of traditional gypsy lifestyle and today's technologies. During the journey we will be running a website, filming a documentary, dropping in on and speaking to local community groups and schools, visiting with various people throughout the community and holding fundraising events such as charity auctions and social dinners in capital cities and larger regional centres.
