Republic Center for Structure Researches
Description: Research directions of the Republican Center for Structure Researches (RCSR) Georgian Technical University, Tbilisi, Georgia E-mail: rcsr@gtu.edu.ge RCSR is one of the major materials research and teaching centers in Georgia. The Republic Center for Structure Researches in the Georgian Technical University is serving several institutions in Georgia with the full range of methods for structural investigation of solid materials. There are currently 22 permanent academic staff, among them: 6 professors, 6 Phd and 10 high-skilled research fellows. Individual members are regularly invited to major international conferences. Besides the scientific research and designing, the center is implementing the ordered works for other organizations and also is involved in joint projects. The research works in the center is currently focused on the new type of deformable cast iron (ADI); high-purity metals; welding/soldering technology for incompatible pairs (e.g. metal-ceramics); Ti-Al single-phase intermetallides; doping of high-temperature superconductors; radiation-resistant insulator films on the surface of semiconductors; high-temperature corrosion of metals; composites; nano-powders, hard alloys, shock-resistant light ceramics; crack initiation and propagation; share-like phase transformations; crystallography of twinning; software for the analysis of electron diffraction data; synthesis of coordination compounds and their structure determination. In addition one group of research fellows is involved in designing of the material for hard filters and ultra filters produced from the local minerals. The filters can be used for refining of technical and food oils, wine, beer, juice, water and other liquids. The group has also developed the composition and technology of manufacturing the new asbestos free compound material for brakes and friction transmissions. One of the major goals of the RCSR is enhancing the skill of students, bachelors and masters. They are actively involved in the center's research that is carried out by the following equipment available in RCSR: • Transmission electron microscopy with the microdiffraction analysis. (EM-10 C/CR, Carl Zeiss, Germany). • Diffraction of fast electrons by reflection and transmission for determination of crystal surface perfection and phase composition. (Electronograph Eg-IOOM, USSR}. • Determination of the mean inner potential of crystal lattice. (RCSR original method patented in the USSR). • Computer simulation of electron diffraction patterns and stereographic projections of single, twinned and two-phase crystals of any system. (RCSR original software package). • Auger- and mass- spectrometry of the secondary ions. (LAS-2000, RIBER, France). • Scanning electron microscopy with X-ray microanalyser. (DSM-960, Carl Zeiss. Germany: Link. UK). • Ordinary, high-temperature and quantitative optical metallography. (MM-6, M-1750, TAS: Leitz, Germany). • X-ray diffractometry. (DRON 3M, USSR; HZG-4A, USSR-Germany). • Determination of temperature dependence of internal friction and share modulus. (RCSR original device patented in the USSR). • Exoelectron emission. (RCSR original device). • Quick determination of the corrosion resistance of metals and alloys. (RCSR original device patented in the USA, Japan, Germany and UK). • Cryogenic device for measurement of electric resistance, (T, j, H) in the temperature range 10-300K. (Leibold-Heraeus, Germany). • Emission Spectrometer. (Quantoport-F; ARL, USA; Purchased with CRDF RESC grant) Research Sponsores: Department of Science and Technology of Georgia. Institute of Stabile Isotopes, Tbilisi, Georgia. Civilian Research and Development Foundation, CRDF, USA. International Science and Technology Center, ISTC, Moscow, Russia.
